And I can't vote.

NOT because I'm under age - I've been eighteen for a while - but because I hadn't registered and then realised that I didn't have time before the April 20th deadline in order to register. Having expected some variety of registration form/letter near my birthday, no such article appeared through the post, and it therefore slipped my mind until the impending approach of the General Election.

Thus I'm sat at home now watching all the Facebook statuses of 'Sam Szreter is votalicious' and 'Jasmine Whiteside just voted, for the win!!' pop tauntingly up in my face.

Though I suppose, being in South Cambs, the outlook is bleak anyway. Dayum this bleddy Conservative constituency in which I live...

However, if there's a hung parliament (it's looking somewhat likely) tomorrow, then I may get a chance to vote again soon should another election be held. Or, you know, David Cameron might get into power, and then the world will end. Blar.

Moving on from poliwhats, my date on Wednesday evening went very well... I ended up eating terribly slowly purely because we were chattering so much, and yeah... it was just nice and relaxing. I was rather nervous beforehand, mind you, but dear Judy was about after college and so I spent the lead-up to 5:30 wandering into town with her while she went and bought a new bike.

MATTIPUS.

The Late Night Revival Bloggathon Thing!

...once again, life stirs in the cesspit remnants of Mattipus's blog, and from the primordial gloob of labels and long-forgotten comments, rises a creature of such awe, unimaginable wonder and majestically grotesque appearance that you cannot help but GAWK at it. Blubbering enticingly, the creature spake thus:

"Yo."

The veritable political feast that is Mr. Alex's latest post has inspired and infatuated me with a desire to blog once more. Suffice to say, I didn't read much of it. But I could still tell it had true substance. In the form of utter ramble, it's true, but it still had a key, important and topical theme. Which is more than can be said about THIS post here, which is, sadly, about to end.

"Wait!"

Ah! Um... sorry, majestic blog-post creature. Ye- yes. Yes, I would love to write some more. Of course... yes. Um. Mmm.

Perhaps a status update since last time? Six months have passed, near enough. Christmas and Birthday were both good, I guess... got some cool new CDs, lots of delicious edibles, a new netbook ready for uni...

YES, uni. Let's talk about that. I've got a conditional offer at Nottingham for Creative and Professional Writing... BCC required. BCC! It's so totally achievable for me, and seeing as the course is so amazing, I've told all those English with Creative Writing courses requiring AAB that I applied for to hop it. Mwuha. Plus, I'll be staying in a lovely new room on a lovely new campus which, oddly, costs less than the lovely, somewhat less new rooms on the lovely main campus. More oresome benefits!

No Gap Yah for me, though.

Music-wise, I have been fully integrated into Dan's world of Progressive... Pain of Salvation, Dream Theater and Anathema now get frequent plays on my mp3. I've also found joy in some more mainstream artists - notably Biffy Clyro, as well as Bloc Party, Placebo, and Elbow. Of course, Pineapple Thief still remains my token favourite and will once more rocket up in number of listens upon the arrival of the new album, 'Someone Here Is Missing'. It's less than a month away.

College is good too - yes there's lots of maths to revise for the close-approaching exams, but now that my English coursework is done (and thus we have finished the entire course), I have more free lessons than timetabled lessons! It's great for my life. I'm also contented by my social life - as the weather improves, the days lengthen and more folks turn 18, so it is that more plans and outings come to rise. My easter was crammed full with a combination of coursework, Playscheme and Parties. Good in some respects, but stressful in others. It's more relaxed now college has resumed, though many happenings are still... well, happening. The approaching Bank Holiday Monday heralds a double Birthday pub-arama for Padwin and Jack, and I'm also taking a certain lovely someone out to dinner on Wednesday. ^_^

Oh, I've also starred in some photos for the college Newspaper, which can be found here. Jas (the photographer) is awesome.

'Nuff said.

"Yeah, alright. Permission to end granted."

Slumber-time for the majestic blog creature. Stay tuned and all that.

Mattipus.

M to the U to the S to the E...

Guess where I went yesterday? Oh yes indeedy...

I believed myself to be in for another dull and dreary weekend of doing nawt much on Thursday evening; however, a totally unexpected opportunity to buy a ticket to see MUSE at the O2 the very next evening came to light. I snaffled up the offer, and less that 24 hours later found myself sat in the arena, waiting patiently for the gig to start.

The support was The Big Pink... to be honest, I remember very little of what they played, eclipsed by MUSE as they were. It was a great setlist:

Uprising - They were concealed inside giant square pillars, which transformed into giant square podiums which moved up and down. What a way to start.

Resistance

New Born - I was slightly annoyed that Mr. Bellamy didn't actually play the piano part for this, but the awesome riff and amazing laser show which came with it makes up for that. HIGHLIGHT.

Map of the Problematique - Glad this was played.

Supermassive Black Hole - Of course.

MK Ultra - This one was good. I didn't appreciate it enough on the album.

Interlude

Hysteria - Hell yes. HIGHLIGHT.

Nishe - Chris and Dom (Bassist and Drummer) doing some instrumental coolness whilst Matt got out his piano...

United States Of Eurasia - ...which had shiny lights inside it.

Cave (Piano Version) - Another HIGHLIGHT; great choice from their Debut way back when.

Yesterday evening heralded great joy and excitement, for me and Micky and Lucy and Padwin set forth on a great venture to the land of Londonium to see Broken Family Band for the last time evar! And lo, it was good, and not just good; it was very good.

We arrived almost an hour early for the support act, so the place was pretty much empty, but we sat about for a while just chattering and soon Chris T-T arrived on stage and entertained us all by Preaching the Converted...

"Poverty's bad, war is bad, racism's bad. They were on form; the music was top notch, Steve was cracking witty (and mostly obscene) remarks left right and centre, and it was a good crowd to. Because I can, this was the set list (in rough order, I couldn't quite figure out what came after what exactly...):

It's All Over - Arbitrary opener which everyone knows.

Salivating

The Booze And The Drugs

Living In Sin - Standout song of the night.

Devil In The Details

Cocktail Lounge

Give And Take

Hey Captain - I died a little inside because it was beautiful.

Stay Friendly - Padwin was especially happy this came up. I also made my own lyric alteration here... "We don't have to sit at their table to know how they're WANKERS!"

Dancing On The 4th Floor

At The Back Of The Chapel - Let's do this old school!

A Place You Deserve

Borrowed Time - Camel!

Walking Back To Jesus Part Two - The one I didn't know.

Song Against Robots

The Mardi Gras Rescue Mission

Queen Of The Sea - The other one I didn't know.

(I Don't Have The Time To) Mess Around - It included a most amusing lyric change... "There's a dog sleeping in my bed, if I tickle his balls he gives me sweet head" (great to start with) became "There's a dog sleeping beneath my bed, if I fuck him in the mouth he licks me on the leg". HA.

Happy Days Are Here Again - Wohoo!

Don't Leave That Woman Unattended - Currently my favourite BFB song due to sheer catchyness.

Leaps - We were gone by this point as we had to catch a tube.

John Belushi - See above.

As you can see, it was a chunky old list. My favourites of the night were The Booze And The Drugs, Living In Sin, Stay Friendly, and Borrowed Time (for the Camel). I was a little disappointed that we had to leave before John Belushi... and I'm Thirsty wasn't played, but it was a good list - more early songs than last time.

We got back to Cambridge at ten past midnight this morning, which I think was pretty good going seeing as we only left the gig at eleven. Shows our superior train-and-tube-catching skills were not in vain.

Mattipus.

Happy Days Are Here Again...

...Wohoo.

Yes, today I am HAPPY for I have got all five days of work over the half-term, which should bolster my bank balance, UCAS is all done, aside from paying and sending, I have once piece of work for the weekend, BFB gig is less than a week away, Mr. Thomas didn't murder me for not completing those integrals (yet), and I had an enjoyable though relatively pointless afternoon of lounging around at college, wandering aimlessly into town and drinking coffee at Caffè Nero once again.

In short: Today = SUCCESS!

Not much else to mention, actually. The summer flashed by in the blink of an eye, college is as expected, plus a bit of UCAS on top. Almost done with the whole palaver, but need to get my references updated! I'm just waiting on Chemistry at current, so if I haven't received a reply by tomorrow I shall have to poke Mrs. Jostock.

Socially, nothing much new either. Seeing a few more old faces from the year below around at Hills, which is nice, but otherwise not much happening. I went to Caffè Nero earlier, had a nice relaxed couple of hours with some of my friendlies, then saw Ellie on the bus, which was a nice surprise. But yeah, nothing amazing.

However, the next week or so should herald much funtimes. I'm off to London with Padwin, Lu-chi and Micky-moo next Wednesday for our last chance to see The Broken Family Band perform live before they split up at the end of October. And then in half-term is Richard's partay, which should be most excellent.

One other thing - I have no idea whether I'll get work (AGAIN) as of yet. It's a couple of weeks to half term, but still no reply from Playscheme with a timetable. I grow impatient and irritable.

Anywho, update complete. I've got plenty of money. It's just I don't want to dent it, especially when I have no work to make up for what I spend this summer. DnD at Frankie's, band practice, multiple sleepovers and hanging out at The Café Project on Fridays = good times.

Back to college on Monday, however. Starting A2 courses! URK! The last few days have been... dull.

Aside from a couple of meetings-up with friends, I have been sitting around doing fuck all. Even though it's been glorious sunshine outside, I only really ventured out yesterday. By then, I was even willing to dig my bike out from the back of the shed and go for a ride around the village.

What is wrong with me? I used to be able to entertain myself easily without the stimulus of friends.

Eh, I guess I've become to much of a socialite.

That said, I've now fully re-immersed myself in the world of RP. Four characters now up and running again, and I have plans to restart the fifth one (so long as one of my fellow RPers is alright with me abandoning the small plot he started, though that should be okay because he doesn't seem to be very active atm). So yes. That's been keeping me sane.

Also, I smell of cat. We're having a new boiler fitted, which means lots of banging and shouting and strange men wandering around our house. And lack of water. That's a big one. So I came in as I normally do, with not much to do but sit and revise for the exam later.

Speaking of exams... the English yesterday went alright. Ish. The Othello question wasn't what I was expecting, but at least it wasn't completely obscure. And the two maths exams in the afternoon went very well. Though I did sit around for about half the time waiting for the exam to finish. I got home at gone six

Also, I've started RPing again! That makes me happy. I've missed it a lot and I'm finally getting back into the flow of it... and it also helps with my plans to take creative writing at uni. Enupnion looks kinda dead (at least for my time zone, there's not many users about) but the other places I RP are still very much alive. Very well, in fact. One of the analytical questions was an absolute gift, and the creative that went with that was on the main character, which is always good.

Just Wednesday's English exam to worry about now.

And the maths. And the physics. And the chemistry. *Frowns*

Anywho, after the exam I lingered with friends for a bit, then spent two hours getting home (damn you, Hills Road bridge), and finally had a couple of hours listening to some Broken Family Band before the gig.

And what a gig!

Although they didn't start until 9:30, they were amazing. I didn't know many of the songs at all, but I still had a lark of a time with Lucy, Ed, Mik and Sian.

The band's frontman, Steve Adams, is hilarious. It was like watching a gig mixed with stand-up. Also, I want the lead guitarist's guitar. Ebony Les Paul with similarly-coloured pickguard and silver hardware.

I could blather on for ages about the witticisms that came up and the great songs. But I won't. I'm off.

If you don't want to know where I am... you know I won't tell you.

Matt.

EXAMS EXAMS DEAR GOD EXAMS

My first is tomorrow. It's got some of my favourite tracks from the Warszawa live album... just not live. Personally, I like the liveun's better. Mayhaps the album versions will grow on me.

I also attempted (and failed) to record my copy of Perpetual Flying Objects, a 7" Pineapple Thief single from a while back. I'm not too bothered that my huge rig-up of dad's laptop, my amp and the record player failed, seeing as it's an oddity for The Pineapple Thief, a strangely poppy thing with throwaway lyrics. The time will come where I find a way to record it.

In other news, I saw a car today on the way to college. Except it wasn't just a car. It was also a tree. Amplifier's self-titled debut from 2005 to be precise. Excellent album, just brilliant.

I've also encountered another Pineapple Thief listener (shock horror!), namely Alex's friend Dan. Since we began he's threatened to lock the door on latecomers. And no empty threat either; today it happened.

Unfortunately, one of my friends Phil had already turned up to the lesson, deposited his bags and then quickly dashed off to fill his water bottle. By the time he got back, the door was securely sealed.

I must commend Mr. Tidbull - he seems to be one of the most capable teachers I've ever had. And funny too, in a heartless way. I like his style.

I expect people will be turning up to lessons on time from now on.

Matt.

Dawn Raid Numero Dos!

Delivery was much quicker this time round. I now have the second of the EPs, and that makes me happy. :)

The acoustic version of Tightly Wound is a great contrast to the original, and opens beautifully. Freefall, a live favourite, is there as well - excellent recording. Bitter Day is bittersweet, in the best possible way, and then there's Second Chance, another off of the download only single of Shoot First.

The better of the two EPs in my opinion, as a whole. I still think the Dawn version of Tightly Unwound is great, though.

My sister decided to open my package for me, which was nice of her. NOT. I picked up an empty shell of packet with the contents missing when I got in, and almost had a heart attack (in a layby). Now there's a first.

Yes, swine flu. Dad reckons that, despite international efforts to try and prevent it spreading, we will all catch it, and there's not a whole lot we can do about it. And seeing as Mexico has been likened to a 'strange zombie city' by The Telegraph, doesn't bode all that well. "Relax," says dad, with a chuckle, "it will be nowhere near as severe here in England. You won't die of it."

Even so, I'd rather not spend time bed-ridden and hallucinating.

The odd thing is, what bothers me most is that if the dreaded Piggy Flu does ravage our country, it'll be at the same time as I should be revising and examing. Gawd.

Oh, did I mention that young adults are the most at risk? Well, apart from old people, but they're always at risk, from everything. Hopefully this one will last longer.

For those who know me: no intro needed. For those who don't: only a brief intro needed. Cast your eyes right. That's a brief bit about me. Other stuff about me you'll find out over the course of this blog. Maybe.

So, it's three weeks before my first exam. AS levels. Scary. The fact I've taken the equivalent of five subjects means there's lots to revise for. Curse you, double maths.

I'm most worried about my English exam. See, I want to go to university at Nottingham and study Creative and Professional writing. I don't doubt I'll get above the entry requirements, it's just that there are only a few spaces up for grabs. I need to stand out. I know it's not for another year yet, but AS results = CRITICAL.

Well, that about concludes this opening post. I think most of my posts will be short and snappy. Hopefully that means the blog will last longer.

Ciao, Matt.
